In the Montana fly fishing world, the Salmonfly hatch is the ultimate dry fly “Gold Rush.” This emergence of the giant Stonefly, Pteronarcys californica, is famous for its massive size and distinct orangish belly. When these “orange blizzards” hit, they trigger an unrivaled predatory response in trophy trout.
The Science of the Hatch Progression
While the giant Stoneflies crawl to the riverbanks, rocks, and willows to emerge from their nymphal cases, the hatch itself progresses upstream as water temperatures rise. This creates a technical ‘window’ that shifts from the lower reaches to the upper headwaters over several weeks.

- The Madison River: The hatch typically begins on the lower river by the first week of June, reaching the upper Madison by the third week of June and lasting into the first week of July.
- The Blackfoot River: Expect the big bugs from the second week of June through late June.
- The Yellowstone River: Our latest Salmonfly sanctuary, with hatches starting around the first week of July and continuing throughout the month.
Runoff Resilience: High, Cold, and Clear
While many anglers worry about “blown out” conditions in June, the Salmonfly hatch thrives in high-water environments. The rivers will be up, cold, and a bit off-color, but they typically clear enough to fish the big dry fly effectively. Unlike the low-water strategies used in August, June is about “Runoff Resilience”, finding the specific, clear windows where trout are keyed into these massive terrestrials.
