Big Hole River Fishing Report 02-15-14

FishTales Outfitting Big Hole River Fishing Report for February 15 2014.

  • Snowpack data from Snotel Montana are positive.
  • Current Big Hole River real-time flows are non functional due to ice.
  • River Conditions- Still locked up with ice in the lower reaches up through Salmon Fly Fishing Access Site (FAS) and the Fish & Game FAS further up. George Grant FAS and up are alLot’s of shelf ice on the bank’s where the river is open. Where cleats.

Nymphing a two fly rig will be your most productive method. Rubber-legged stonefly patterns #8-10 in black or brown are my a good choice. For a second fly, lot’s of midges around so midge patterns in red or others with red will work Copper John’s, Serendipity, and the ever popular San Juan worm in #8-14. Orange, pink, and yellow egg patterns in #12-16 will also be productive.

Dry flies- There are fish rising to midges, not big numbers but enough….  look for rise forms in softer water further down in runs and in back eddy’s. Try a Purple Haze, Parachute Adams or Griffith’s Gnat in a #14-18.

Streamer bite has been a little soft being winter. Better on warm, cloudy day’s as you might expect. Try dead drifting, slowing down your retrieve or classic quartering downstream swing.

Sculpin patterns in olive or brown or a Zonker in natural/pearl natural/copper #10-6.

Be aware of winter fishing hazards like drifting ice, shelf ice and rapid weather changes. So be prepared with good winter fishing gear by…..? cleats by

The brown’s just where and the rainbow’s are starting to spawn in the shallow’s so watch your step.
