Every great story has a beginning. Ours starts on the quiet streams of Connecticut, where a grandfather’s patience and wisdom taught a young Michael Stack not just how to fish, but how to develop a profound love and respect for the outdoors. That early passion became a lifelong pursuit.
Michael’s journey led him to the rugged wilderness of Alaska’s Katmai National Park, guiding anglers in pursuit of massive rainbows and Pacific Salmon. But the legendary trout rivers of Montana called to him. For over twenty-five years, Michael has dedicated himself to mastering the nuances of these world-renowned waters, culminating in the founding of FishTales Outfitting—a guide service built on a foundation of authentic expertise, passion, and a lifetime of experience.

Our Amazing Montana Fly Fishing Guides
Michael Stack – Owner/Outfitter
Michael grew up hunting and fishing in Connecticut. As a youth, he spent a lot of time in the woods with his grandfather. He was a passionate, avid outdoorsman and Connecticut State Park constable that instilled Michael’s deep respect and love for the outdoors. In 1995, Michael decided to follow his dreams, love of the outdoors, and fly fishing and packed his bags for Alaska where he guided his first season in Katmai National Park chasing giant rainbows and Pacific Salmon on The Kulik, Moraine, and Kukaklek Rivers alongside Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears.
The following spring, opportunity led him to Montana, where the fly fishing guiding job of his childhood dreams came true. Since then, he has guided here in Southwestern Montana, putting down roots and establishing FishTales Outfitting. He’s a long-time career guide and fly fishing outfitter with over twenty-five years of guiding experience. He is intimate with the waters of southwest Montana and looks forward to sharing our amazing Montana trout rivers with you.
Mike Price - Guide
Mike grew up fishing in Colorado on some of the most technical tailwater rivers in the west. He has a niche for finding and catching difficult trout on pressured streams. Eventually, he realized that being in a boat and fishing dry flies on big, free-flowing rivers with wild trout was the pinnacle of the sport. Now in Montana, he spends as much time as he can floating its fabled waters and loves to share his passion with everyone. Mike is a very patient and enthusiastic guide who likes to think outside the box.
LaMont Carter - Guide
Lamont grew up fishing in Utah. “My dad bought me my first fly rod when I was 16 years old. It took me 5 years of “trying” before I actually caught my first fish”. Lamont has also guided in Wyoming and Idaho. Lamont eventually fulfilled his lifelong dream to guide and live in Montana. His first year guiding in Montana was in West Glacier National Park. Lamont is a patient guide with a passion for fly fishing that is infectious to anyone he guides no matter what their skill level. He teaches them the knowledge that they can understand and have a great time learning. Lamont and his wife Jayla reside near the Beaverhead River in Dillon. On his off time, you can find him throwing streamers and chasing brown trout.
Wade Whitaker - Guide
Chris Phillips - Guide
Chris Phillips was born and raised in Western Washington state where he grew up fishing the local lakes for trout and bass, he also fished the rivers for steelhead and salmon. Chris also worked with foster kids in Washington and as outdoor activities he would take them fishing, instilling and sharing his passion for angling in all aspects. He moved to Montana in 2012 with his wife Allison and their son Silas. They quickly fell in love with the mountains, lakes and of course the rivers. Residing in South Western Montana Chris guides on the Madison, Yellowstone, Gallatin and Missouri rivers primarily. Chris is passionate and eager to share our slice of heaven here in Montana.
Jason Leprevost - Guide
Garet Baker - Guide
Garet Baker was born and raised in Colorado. Garet was hooked on fly fishing from the age of 14 years old, catching anything he could from his neighborhood ponds and the local rivers. He has a variety of experiences fishing in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington State, Montana, and more. Garet and his wife settled in Gallatin County in 2021 to pursue a passion for fly fishing. Garet started guiding at the age of 18 years old and is known for his optimism, patience, and passion. He spends any time he can on the water with his friends and family. When he isn’t guiding he is spending time outdoors, skiing, fishing, and camping with his wife and dog.
Dan Roberts - Guide
Dan has a diverse background in fishing across various terrains. Growing up in the Eastern Sierra, he honed his skills in mountain streams, before venturing to the west coast for surf fishing and exploring the lakes of East Texas for bass and catfish. Settling in Montana, Dan has immersed himself in trout fishing and guiding year-round.
Known for his patience and expertise, Dan excels as a guide, particularly enjoying working with families and beginners, teaching them the art of fly fishing and ensuring they have memorable experiences on the water.
Outside of guiding, Dan leads a rich outdoor lifestyle. He enjoys playing music, skiing with his family, camping, and exploring new fishing opportunities for different species. His passion for nature and fishing shines through in his pursuits, both on and off the water.
Dave Hernden - Guide
Dave grew up in Saginaw, Michigan and Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was introduced to fly fishing at a very young age but didn’t become obsessed with it until I moved to Colorado. He’s been seriously fly fishing for about 18 years and guiding ever since. Dave loves teaching all aspects of fly fishing, the importance of being in nature, and connecting the two. Passing it on to hopefully change someone’s life or just give them a bit of joy and relaxation. He admits he likes catching any fish that wiggles, but his favorite species are trout, because of how and where we catch them.
